2024 Legislative Luncheon

On May 22, the RVRC hosted the 2024 Legislative Luncheon on the campus of South Georgia Technical College (SGTC), in Americus.
During the annual event, elected officials from the State and Federal governments were invited to address the group of approximately 160 attendees to discuss legislation that they have been working on for the past year, as well as their plans for the upcoming year. Attendees included officials from state and local government agencies in the River Valley Region, including local mayors, city council members, county commissioners, and educators, among others.
Speakers included Jody Redding, a representative from the office of Georgia Governor, Brian Kemp, U.S. Senate spokespersons, Alyse Wolf (John Ossoff’s office) and Brenda Williams (Raphael Warnock’s office), as well as Christopher Kelley, a spokesperson for U.S. House Representative, Sanford Bishop.
Additionally, seven elected state officials, Ed Harbison (Senate District 15), Freddie Powell-Sims (Senate District 12), Gerald Greene (House District 151), Debbie Buckner (House District 137), Vance Smith (House District 133), Mike Cheokas (House District 138), and Teddy Reese (House District 140), were called on to have a panel-style discussion of what’s in store for the River Valley Region. Led by RVRC Council Chairman, Carvel Lewis, the panelists touted successful legislative actions that they have championed over the past year, lamented some of their legislative work that failed to be passed in the past year, and shared some of their goals for the upcoming year.
Overall, it was an informative discourse with plenty of lighthearted dialog that displayed the officials’ comradery towards one another and their genuine love for the communities in the River Valley Region.
Following the panel discussion, the speakers and attendees were invited to have lunch, catered by SGTC.
